How to Rename Yourself Before Entering a Zoom Meeting
To protect the security of our Zoom meetings, teachers have been instructed to only allow entry to students whose "Zoom names" match their actual names. Sometimes the automatically generated name doesn't match your own, and it can be tricky to set this up in advance, as some methods for joining Zoom meetings don't allow for renaming before joining.
Zoom App (Mac/PC)
You won't be able to change your name in advance if you click on the teacher's Zoom link:
Follow these steps to rename yourself before entering the meeting:
- Open the Zoom app
- Click "Join a Meeting"
- Paste in the teacher's meeting ID or the link itself
- Update your name (if applicable)
Join from Browser (Mac/PC)
Follow these steps to rename yourself before entering the meeting (note that joining Zoom meetings from your browser will meanĀ limited functionality):
- Open the teacher's Zoom link
- Click Join from your browser
- Enter your name
Chromebook
You won't be able to change your name in advance if you click on the teacher's Zoom link:
Follow these steps to rename yourself before entering the meeting:
- Open the Zoom app
- Paste in the teacher's meeting ID (pasting the link in its entirety won't work here)
- Update your name (if applicable)
iOS (iPad/iPhone)
On iOS, both clicking on the link and manually joining a meeting will give you the opportunity to rename yourself:
- Option 1: Clicking on the meeting link will prompt you to open the Zoom app and type your name:
- Option 2: Opening the Zoom app and tapping Join a Meeting will prompt you to paste in the meeting ID and type your name:
